Types of Stroke: Diagnosis & Treatment

Stroke is a condition referred to as cerebrovascular accident or cerebrovascular insult or we can call it as Brain Attack. The condition arises when blood flow to any part of the brain suddenly stops. This will damage brain cells and if not treated immediately it may lead to brain death. The condition needs urgent medical care and treatment. The lagging of treatment will make the patient's condition more critical.

There different types of stroke,
  1. Intracerebral Hemorrhage
  2. Subarachnoid Hemorrhage

Intracerebral Hemorrhage

This type of stroke occurs mainly due to high blood pressure or hypertension. During that time the arteries of the blood vessels will break and blood will spread into brain tissues. These blood will clot and it is known as hematoma. This condition grows and surrounding tissues may incur pressure. Due to this, the person will be feeling tension and lethargic. At the mean time, the broken arteries will not supply blood to the specified areas and lead to stroke. Intracerebral Hemorrhage usually occur in basal ganglia, cerebellum, brain stem, cortex.

  • Vomiting
  • Sudden weakness
  • Seizures
  • Nausea
  • Temporary loss of vision etc

Diagnosis

When a person shows symptoms of Intracerebral Hemorrhage, then immediate medical care should be given. If ignored may lead to unconsciousness & death. This can be diagnosed with CT Scan, MRI Scan or Angiogram

CT Scan or Computed Tomography: The scan will produce brain images, that will explain any damage or fracture & bleeding inside the brain.

MRI Scan or Magnetic Resonance Imaging: It is more clear than CT scan. MRI will recognise any deep brain damage or injury.

Angiogram: This is done for seeing the blood flow through arteries.

Treatment

Treatment includes both surgical and non surgical. According to the patient's condition and the time delay occurred after Intracerebral Hemorrhage may decide the treatment method. Usually surgical method is used to remove the blood clot and reduce the pressure. The doctor will also consider the area of brain to which it happened. If it is not possible for a surgery then control of blood pressure, intracranial pressure may decrease the risk of bleeding and removal of cerebrospinal fluid from ventricle are other methods.

Common surgeries for Intracerebral Hemorrhage are craniotomy & steriotactic aspiration.

Subarachnoid Hemorrhage

Subarachnoid Hemorrhage occur because of the bleeding in subarachnoid space which is between the brain and thin tissues that protect the brain. This will immediately generate a severe headache in patient. Subarachnoid Hemorrhage can be caused because of several problems like,
  • Ruptured cerebral aneurysm
  • Head injury etc

Symptoms are,

Sudden headache or thunderclap headache is the main symptom of Subarachnoid Hemorrhage.

Other symptoms are,

  • Eyelid drooping
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Muscle aches
  • Stiff neck
  • Seizure
  • Decrease consciousness & alertness etc

Diagnosis

Subarachnoid Hemorrhage is diagnosed using several techniques like CT scan, MRI scan, cerebral angiography, transcranial doppler ultrasound etc.

Treatment

Surgery is the main option for the treatment which focuses on saving the person's life who affected with Subarachnoid Hemorrhage. Also tries to prevent it from further occurrence. The main surgeries are craniotomy & endovascular coiling.
